I have become obsessed with Pine marten after a chance encounter with one on a quiet country road about three years ago. At that point I was obsessed with the Chanonry Point dolphins but that’s now taken a back seat as I try (often without success) to photograph these marvellous mustelids.
In 2009 I received an e-mail from Terry Whittaker asking about the martens I’d been watching. It turned out that he had spent time in Ireland trying to photograph them as part of a research project. We arranged to meet up on The Black Isle to look at some marten work and the images you see here are the results of a lot of hard work and terry’s expertise.
These images were taken at various times of the day with shutter speeds ranging from 1/40th to no more that 1/150 at f2.8. My processing skills need a bit of work I guess but I am very pleased with the results.
The experience of watching this marten and her three kits is one I’ll never forget and was a real privilege. The marten is one of the rarest mammals in the UK although it’s common across the Scottish highlands. Most marten encounters come in gardens or when they dart across the road at night in front of your car. This marten is 100% wild and all images were captured in her natural habitat from a hide.
Please contact me if you would like to know more. All images are available to buy in print at various sizes.
